Notes from the Road - Elliott BROOD

On the way to Thunder Bay...

Notes from the Road is Music Canada’s artist tour diary. Canadian artists on tour around the world will share their stories of fans, gigs and the “good, bad and the ugly” of touring!

We're just outside of Thunder Bay, maybe an hour or so. The western leg of the tour got off to a great start last night in Sault Ste. Marie. Lop Lop's is a great little bar in the Soo with a pretty wide selection of high end scotches. I stuck with the Jameson's despite the more expensive options.
If last night is any indication of how the rest of the tour will go, we're going to need a lot of energy. It's actually been 2 years since we did a proper cross country tour, and it seems like people are excited to have us back. Crowds so far have been really receptive to the new songs and they're even singing along to a couple already.
Today's drive is one of my favourites of the whole trip so I drove most of it. It's about 8 hours around the top edge of Lake Superior from the Soo to Thunder Bay. There's a lot of great stretches of road in this country and we'll see a lot of them on this trip, but this is by far one of the prettiest this time of year, at least for a main highway anyways. We were hoping we'd catch more of the fall colours, but we're about a week late. There are still plenty of great golds, deep reds and browns, but the trees are definitely bracing for winter already. We actually got some wet snow around Wawa. The roads this time of year are pretty deserted for the most part. Cottagers have returned to the cities for the winter and the truck stops are little quieter... half filled with truckers and 20-somethings heading west for snowboard season. This is by far the best time of year.
Tonight's show should be pretty great. Thunder Bay has always been incredibly kind to us. Our promoter, Frank Laffredo, has probably been doing shows in Thunder Bay since before I was born. Any band who has ever played T-Bay in the past 30 years knows him, and he should probably be included in the history of Canadian music somewhere. Frank always makes us feel at home, and he's a huge fan of the band, so it's always great to get back here to see him.
Thunder Bay is also famous for Finnish pancakes. There's a place called The Hoito that serves them up, and is a must-stop for anyone travelling through. There are tons of these "staple" restaurants across the country, and we'll hit all of our faves on this tour.
We're just about to pass the hotel where Neil Young wrote "Sugar Mountain" when he was twenty or so. I love that it's still there. I'm sure the owners get the odd request from curious Neil-heads wondering what room it was, but we're late for soundcheck.

Casey Laforet is one third of Elliott BROOD, playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass pedals, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, lap steel, and vocals. Elliott BROOD just released their latest album, Days Into Years, on Paper Bag Records. The band is currently touring Canada with One Hundred Dollars.
