Notes from the Road - Elliott BROOD #2

Into The Prairies

Notes from the Road is Music Canada’s artist tour diary. Canadian artists on tour around the world will share their stories of fans, gigs and the “good, bad and the ugly” of touring!

We started out of Saskatoon a little later than expected this morning. We got to spend two days there, staying at The Senator Hotel, which is one of my favourites in the country. Their maple breakfast sausage is worth the 8 hour drive from Winnipeg and has been converting vegetarians for years.

The past few shows have been sold out and incredible. Audiences have been crazy, and the new songs are definitely catching on. Thunder Bay and Winnipeg on consecutive nights have been exhausting in the best possible way. The kindness and generosity of the people who have come out to see us can not be overstated.

There have been a lot of great costumes on display over the Halloween weekend, but Steve took the cake last night, dressed as the late Jack Layton. I knew Layton was a guitar player, but turns out he's an even better drummer!

We caught a great Sam Roberts Band show at the Odeon on Sunday night and I cruised down 20th street on Monday to check out the pawn shops. 20th street is like Saskatoon's own version of Parkdale in Toronto, but with a prairie flavour.

For now, we're outside of town on our way to Lethbridge. A patchwork of gravel and fresh asphalt make up a "shortcut" road that splits far reaching golden wheat fields. Our GPS has an amazing sense of adventure. There are crucifix telephone poles lining the passenger side of the road. Two foxes and a coyote have been spotted already and there's not much to do for the next 8 hours but try to find more.

We play Lethbridge tonight, which is a town that is very close to our hearts. On our first tour, Lethbridge was the first place we played. We drove straight out to Alberta to play a legendary little club called the Tongue And Groove. We'd have some incredible shows at that little bar over the following years, but it unfortunately closed a few years back.

The boys at The Slice (the venue we play tonight) have picked up the slack nicely though, and we've even had a pizza named after us there. They literally do have some of the best pizza we've had in this country, and that's saying a LOT being from Windsor.

Our career as a touring band really started in Lethbridge, and we have a ton of good friends in town that we're excited to see tonight. We have a relatively short 4 hour drive tomorrow into the mountains to Canmore which is great considering it's always Saturday night in Lethbridge.

Casey Laforet is one third of Elliott BROOD, playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass pedals, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, lap steel, and vocals. Elliott BROOD just released their latest album, Days Into Years, on Paper Bag Records. The band is currently touring Canada with One Hundred Dollars.
