Music Canada Welcomes Government Investment and Streaming Regulation Reset

Ottawa (Ontario) June 3, 2026:

Today, the Government of Canada announced its plans to direct the CRTC to reconsider its recent decision on streaming platform obligations and a commitment of $600 million in direct investment to Canada’s arts and culture sectors.

Music Canada applauds the government for recognizing that regulatory frameworks that intersect with music must reflect the modern streaming marketplace, where partnerships and investments from streaming platforms are key to the success of Canadian artists. And we welcome the government’s timely and direct investments.

“We champion policies that help Canadian artists succeed at home, reach global audiences, and compete in today’s music streaming marketplace,” said Patrick Rogers, CEO of Music Canada. “Today’s announcement by Minister Miller does that by demonstrating the government’s strong commitment to supporting the cultural sector, while keeping the streaming services Canadians love affordable and recognizing that the tools used to regulate the traditional domestic broadcasting sector won’t work for the entirely different model of streaming.”

Canadian artists have embraced the global reach of streaming, making Canada the third largest exporter of music in the world. Online streaming is the primary way Canadians listen to and pay for music. It is by far the largest driver of recorded music industry revenue in Canada, accounting for over 75% of overall revenue and Canada ranks as the 8th largest subscription streaming market in the world. Policies to support Canadian music need to reflect the modern music marketplace and the critical role streaming plays in it.

Music Canada looks forward to working with the government on policies that incentivize continued investment by global music streaming platforms in Canadian music teams, programs, and sponsorships that showcase and elevate Canadian, Indigenous, and French-language artists and help them grow audiences across the country and around the world.
