Wiz Khalifa Receives 3X Platinum Plaque For Blockbuster Hit

Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa was in Toronto last week with Fall Out Boy for a performance at Toronto’s Molson Canadian Amphitheater on the Boys Of Zummer tour. Prior to taking the stage, Khalifa was presented with a custom plaque by Warner Music Canada commemorating the Triple Platinum certification of his latest single “See You Again” (ft. Charlie Puth) from the Furious 7 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

“See You Again” is the seventh Canadian certification for Wiz Khalifa and joins his tracks “Black And Yellow” and “Young Wild And Free” as his highest to date. Fans of the the Fast And Furious franchise have welcomed the song as a touching tribute to actor Paul Walker, who passed away during the filming of the 7th installment of the film franchise in 2013.

Sam Hunt Receives Gold Plaque For Debut Album

Country newcomer Sam Hunt was in Toronto last week for an opening slot on multi-Platinum superstars Lady Antebellum’s summer tour with Hunter Hayes at the Molson Canadian Ampitheatre. During his visit, Universal Music Canada presented Hunt with a custom Gold plaque commemorating the sales achievements of his debut album Montevallo and single “Leave The Night On”. His latest single “Take Your Time” was also included on the plaque for it’s recent Platinum certification.

Mumford & Sons Receive Platinum Plaques During Niagara Stopover

Canadian fans of UK folk-rock outfit Mumford & Sons have welcomed the band’s new electric sound with open arms, as their latest album Wilder Mind has officially been certified Platinum in Canada. After a brief hiatus since their 5X Platinum selling album Babel, Mumford & Sons returned to Canada on June 15 for a stopover on their Gentlemen Of The Road tour at The Commons in Niagara-On-The-Lake. During their visit, the band was presented with custom Platinum award plaques for Wilder Mind by Universal Music Canada and Glassnote label manager Ryan Shepard (pictured centre).

Wilder Mind’s lead single “Believe” can be listened to below, which was also certified Gold in Canada.

Josh Groban Presented With Gold Plaque For 2015 Album ‘Stages’

Multi-Platinum American vocalist Josh Groban was in Toronto this week to promote his latest album Stages, which was certified Gold in Canada earlier in May. This is the second certification for Groban in 2015, as his Christmas album Noel earned 6X Platinum status in January.

On Wednesday night, Groban was presented with a custom Gold plaque for the collection of Broadway hits. The singer took to Instagram and Twitter to thank Warner Music Canada for the surprise gift and share the news with his fans.

Groban will return to Toronto in September for two performances at the Sony Centre September 21 & 22. Tickets are on sale now!

New Canadian Certifications: Week of March 23, 2015

Below you will find Music Canada’s Gold/Platinum certifications for the week of March 23, 2015.

This week, hip hop MC and producer J.Cole earned his first Gold album certification in Canada for his album 2014 Forest Hills Drive. American rock outfit Fall Out Boy also earned a Gold album certification for their latest American Beauty/American Psycho. Meghan Trainor‘s 2014 breakout hit “All About That Bass” earned a 6X Platinum certification, while her second single “Lips Are Movin” went Double Platinum.

UK’s Ben Howard Presented With Gold Award Plaque In Toronto

benhowardgoldUK singer-songwriter Ben Howard was presented with Canadian Gold album award plaques in Toronto, ON last week for his 2011 Mercury Prize nominated LP Every Kingdom, which was officially certified earlier this year.

Howard (pictured right) along with with his manager Owain Davies (pictured left) were presented with the awards by Universal Music Canada publicist Mima Agozzino prior to his 2 sold-out shows at Toronto’s Massey Hall on February 1 &2, 2015. Howard is currently on a North American tour in support of his 2014 album I Forget Where We Were, which also featured Canadian stops in Montreal, QC and Vancouver, BC.

2014 Gold/Platinum Year End Review

In 2014, Music Canada’s Gold/Platinum Certification Program recognized a number of Canadian and International releases achieving milestone success.

In December 2014, Michael Buble’s 2011 album Christmas received the highest certification of the year, earning Diamond certification status in Canada. It is the first Diamond certification since Adele’s 21 in 2011 and the first Canadian Diamond Certification since Celine Dion’s Christmas album These Are Special Times and her greatest hits compilation All The Way…A Decade Of Song in 2007.

Earlier in the year, Mumford & Sons 2012 album Babel was certified 5X Platinum while Eminem‘s 2013 album Marshall Mathers LP 2 was certified 4X Platinum. The highest Canadian multi-Platinum album certifications were Arcade Fire‘s Reflektor (’13) and The Canadian Tenors‘ The Perfect Gift (’10), both of which were certified 3X Platinum. Other albums to be certified 3X Platinum were The Black Keys El Camino (’11)Imagine Dragons Night Visions (’12) and Bruno Mars Unorthodox Jukebox (’12).

There were 85 albums certified Gold in Canada this year (up from 75 in 2013), with 20 of those albums being Canadian artists. There were 36 albums certified Platinum this year (up from 34 in 2013) with 9 of those albums being Canadian artists.

The highest certification for a song released in 2014 was Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” at 5x Platinum, while Sam Smith‘s “Stay With Me” and Meghan Trainor‘s “All About That Bass” were the 2nd highest certified 2014-released tracks at 4X Platinum. There were 2 tracks certified 9X Platinum this year; Adele‘s “Rolling In The Deep” (’10) and Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” (’13). Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” was certified 8X Platinum (’11).

The highest certified Canadian track released in 2013 was Magic!‘s “Rude” at 3X Platinum, while the highest certified Canadian track not released in 2014 was  Simple Plan‘s “Summer Paradise” (’10), also certified 3X Platinum. Other songs released in 2014 that were certified 3X Platinum were Calvin Harris‘ “Summer”, Ariana Grande‘s “Problem (ft. Iggy Azalea)” and Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy (ft. Charli XCX)”.

There were 143 tracks certified Gold this year (up from 124 in 2013), 21 of which were Canadian artists. 74 tracks were certified Platinum, 10 of which were Canadian artists.
