iHeartRadio officially launches in Canada’s growing streaming market

In January 2016, Bell Media announced an exclusive partnership to bring the American media company brand iHeartRadio, North America’s fastest growing digital audio service with over 90 million registered users, to Canada’s evolving streaming market.

On Monday, iHeartRadio Canada officially went live, giving Canadians a free new service to access over 100 licensed Bell Media English and French music, sports, and talk radio stations across 54 markets. The service also offers more than 100 additional digital-only music stations, curated for dozens of genres and designed to suit every taste.

“iHeartRadio Canada harnesses the strength of Bell Media’s radio stations in addition to more than 100 exclusive, curated digital music stations, placing them all conveniently at the fingertips of every Canadian,” said Randy Lennox, President of Broadcasting and Content, Bell Media, who spearheaded the deal upon stepping into the role in 2015. “iHeartRadio is an enormously successful brand that will represent Bell Media’s radio strategy in Canada, in many incarnations, including must-see live concerts, events, and more.”

In conjunction with Monday’s launch, iHeartRadio revealed plans for Canada’s first Jingle Ball, happening November 25 at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. The Canadian version of Jingle Ball, also taking place in a dozen cities across the US, will feature homegrown superstars The Weeknd, Alessia Cara, Hedley, Serena Ryder, Belly, and Kardinal Offishall, who hosts radio show The Kardi Party for Bell Media-owned Virign Radio and syndicated nationwide via iHeartRadio. American acts Kent Jones and multi-Plaitnum chart-toppers The Chainsmokers will also join the Toronto lineup.

Over the weekend, CTV Two will broadcast the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Festival from Las Vegas, a two-night event jam-packed with legendary performers including U2, Sia, Sting, Britney Spears, and Usher; plus all-star collaborations, including Billy Idol and Miley Cyrus; Ariana Grande and Zedd; and Backstreet Boys and Florida Georgia Line. Throughout the summer, Canadian fans were given a sneak peek at the company’s premiere programming with branded events like iHeartRadio Fest (formerly CHUM FM FanFest) at Toronto’s Canadian Music Week, and the nationwide broadcast of the 2016 iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards.

iHeartRadio Canada is now available for free via the web, and iOS and Android devices.  While details have not been officially announced, iHeartRadio is also expected to launch their paid on-demand streaming tiers in 2017.

Submissions now open for 2017 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class

Following a successful inaugural year, the JUNO Awards and Slaight Music have announced the return of the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class leading up to the 2017 JUNO Awards in Ottawa, ON. The unique artist development program aims to provide three Canadian artists or groups with essential tools, opportunities, and connections to amplify their careers.

The top three artists will be selected by the Super Jury consisting of JUNO Award winners Kardinal Offishall, Max Kerman of Arkells, Lights, and producer Gavin Brown, as well as A&R representative Ali Slaight of Slaight Music, and President/CEO of CARAS and MusiCounts, Allan Reid.

“Looking back on the early years of the band, I was pretty frazzled about 98% of the time. If I can offer some advice to a young artist to get that number down to 95%, then this is a job worth doing,” said 2016/17 Super Jury member Max Kerman. “The Master Class provides very practical utilities for artists hoping to get their foot in the door. I’m happy to be involved again this year.”

The three finalists will receive an all-inclusive trip to Toronto for an intensive mentorship week with Canada’s Music Incubator at Coalition Music, culminating with a music industry showcase night. The finalists will also receive an all-inclusive trip to the 2017 JUNOS in Ottawa, ON, showcase opportunities during JUNOfest, a mini-doc on JUNOTV.ca, studio time at Slaight Music Recording Studios, and a $10,000 MuchFACT Online Music Video Award.

Submissions for 2017 are open and will close on June 30, 2016 at 5:00 PM ET. The top 10 finalists, selected by representatives from major and independent music labels, publishers, agents, managers and media partners, will be announced August 3 at www.junomasterclass.ca. The three winners will be revealed on September 13.

Ontario Music Fund launched to help support and create jobs, and position the province as a leading destination to record and perform

The Ontario Music Fund was officially launched today, which will help support create jobs in Ontario’s music industry, and position the province as a leading destination to record and perform. The announcement was made by the Hon. Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, at Revolution Recordings studio in Toronto. 

As per the release, the new fund will support Ontario-based music companies and music production and distribution through four streams: 

  • Music Company Development – Helps Ontario-based music companies increase recording, production and marketing, which boosts sales of music and supports job creation.
  • Music Industry Development – Provides support for initiatives such as digital innovation, music training and new approaches to increase home-grown music exports.
  • Music Futures– Helps leverage Ontario’s diverse and emerging music industry by supporting small music companies and artist entrepreneurs, for example those who create music and also handle the business and promotion of their music.
  • Live Music– Helps increase the number of live music events in the province and generates more opportunities for new and emerging local artists — boosting tourism and growing local economies.

“Our government is proud to partner with our music industry through the new Ontario Music Fund that will capitalize on our infrastructure, critical mass and competitive edge to drive economic growth and jobs,” said Minister Chan. “Home to the largest and most diverse music industry in the nation, we are committed to amplifying our success on the world stage and place Ontario on the map as a cultural and creative capital.”

“Music is a superpower that’s primed and ready to perform for Ontario. It’s a smart investment given the globally competitive advantage we have in the recorded and live music sectors,” says Graham Henderson, President of Music Canada. “Research has shown that targeted support for music will pay off with enormous dividends including job growth, increased investment, tourism and the transformation of Ontario into one of the recording capitals of the world. As we in the music community like to say, music can help.”

Applications for the Ontario Music Fund are open now, and can be made through the OMDC Online Application Portal at https://apply.omdc.on.ca/. Applications may be submitted on an ongoing basis until January 31, 2014.

At today’s event, Kim Cooke, owner of Revolution Recordings, introduced Minister Chan, saying it’s “important to acknowledge Minister Chan and his staff. In tough times, with a major workload and competing demands, he has fought hard for the cultural sector and embraced the Ontario Music Fund file with vigour.” OMFCooke
