James Barker Band take home JUNO and Gold award plaque from Vancouver

Ontario-crafted country outfit James Barker Band had a sensational 2017, raking in two Canadian Gold Singles for tracks of their breakthrough debut EP Game On. During JUNO weekend in Vancouver, the band was surprised by Universal Music Canada with a third Single Award plaque for the “Just Sayin.” The group also took home some more hardware from Vancouver, winning the JUNO for 2018 Country Album of the Year during the Gala Dinner and Awards, where they also performed.

The band announced the news to their fan in an Instagram video, popping champagne while overlooking the beautiful Downtown Vancouver scenery.

Jess Moskaluke surprised with Canadian Gold plaque during JUNO weekend in Vancouver

Canadian country star Jess Moskaluke was surprised with a Gold Single Award plaque from MDM Recordings for her single “Kiss Me Quiet” during JUNO weekend in Vancouver. “Kiss Me Quiet” is the Saskatchewan singer-songwriter’s second solo Gold track certification, with “Cheap Wine & Cigarettes” earning Platinum status in 2016. Moskaluke has also received a Gold certification for her collaboration with Paul Brandt on “I’m An Open Road,” which was certified in June of 2017.

Moskaluke spent the better part of the JUNO Awards festivities recovering from the flu, but that did not stop her from sharing the news with her fans through Instagram as soon as she could.

British Columbia music community celebrates new music fund, AMPLIFY BC

Vancouver, March 22, 2018: Music BC and Music Canada today applaud the Government of British Columbia’s announcement of a new music fund for the province called AMPLIFY BC. Administered through Creative BC, the new Fund will provide much-needed support for the development of BC artists and musicians, music companies, skills development and live music production, stimulating economic growth and activity in the sector.

“Music Canada would like to applaud the Government of BC and Minister Beare for this important investment which demonstrates their confidence in the music sector,” says Amy Terrill, Executive Vice President of Music Canada. “The intense interest in the former BC Music Fund’s suite of programs underscores that BC is home to a vibrant, diverse and engaged music community ready to take their songs and businesses to the next level. With this new investment BC will continue to benefit from leveraged private and other government dollars, and ensure the BC music sector remains competitive with other jurisdictions.”

The announcement was made during JUNOs Week, as the Canadian music industry was congregated in Vancouver for the 47th annual JUNO Awards, celebrating excellence in Canadian music while also showcasing Vancouver, and the province’s music sector to the rest of the country.

“This is a great day for the province’s music scene allowing us to build on the momentum of the last two years,” says Alex Grigg, Executive Director of Music BC. “In this time, our industry has focused on helping BC artists develop their careers and showcase their talent around the world, boost business in BC studios, create greater opportunities for live music performances that bolster activity in our communities, and facilitate professional development so that we can build a stronger, more sustainable industry. On behalf of the staff, board of directors and the BC music industry we extend our gratitude to the Government of BC and Minister Beare for their continued support and investment into the BC Music sector.”

Music BC and Music Canada would also like to thank all members of the BC music community who participated in the effort to secure provincial funding and shared their insights, experiences and success stories. The one-year investment of $7.5 million will contribute to BC’s strong and vibrant communities and also benefit BC tourism, arts and creative industries, and small business development.

#EveryStage: How Music Canada’s Music Cities advocacy aims to make Canadian municipalities more music and musician friendly

Last week Music Canada launched our JUNOS 2018 #EveryStage campaign, intended to highlight the ways our advocacy supports artists at every stage of their career, with a blog about our aim to secure equitable access to quality music education for all young Canadians.

We’re proud to return as a Platinum Partner of the 47th annual JUNOS, sponsoring both the Album of the Year category as well as the official kickoff to JUNO weekend, the Welcome Reception.

In the second installment of our four-part series leading up the 2018 JUNO Awards, we’ll explore Music Cities and Music Canada’s efforts to help make Canadian municipalities more music and musician-friendly. A Music City is a community of any size with a vibrant music economy.

How we advocate

Music Canada’s world-renowned and globe-spanning research has identified several key strategies that cities both large and small can use to grow and strengthen their music economy. We work with municipal governments and regional partners to implement music and musician-friendly policies, establish music offices and advisory boards, as well as promote music tourism, audience development and access to the spaces and places where music is made.

Cities across Canada, including London, Vancouver, Hamilton, Calgary, Toronto, Barrie/Simcoe County, Halifax, Moncton, Ottawa, Windsor-Essex, Guelph and more have implemented or are exploring measures to maximize the impact, growth and support for their local music ecosystems, and Music Canada has been proud to provide support through our research and expertise in the development of these strategies.

Our annual Music Cities Summit at Canadian Music Week brings policymakers, city planners and global music industry representatives together to discuss, learn and collaborate.

Chambers of commerce have an opportunity to carve out a leadership role in leveraging music as a driver of employment and economic growth. In 2016, Music Canada partnered with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) to create a Music Cities Toolkit, designed to provide the CCC’s network of over 450 chambers of commerce and boards of trade, in all regions of the country, with a guide to activate the power of music in their city.

Gary Slaight announced as 2018 Humanitarian Award recipient

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced broadcasting executive, music industry leader, and philanthropist Gary Slaight as the recipient of the 2018 Humanitarian Award. The award, formally known as the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award, recognizes an outstanding individual in the music community whose humanitarian contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada and/or whose impact can be felt worldwide.

“We are honoured to present Gary Slaight with the Humanitarian Award,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards and MusiCounts. “His commitment to helping others and continued selflessness places him in a category of his own. Gary’s dedication to making the world a better place is truly inspiring; from The Slaight Family Foundation’s work with charities to his support for emerging artists, and music industry organizations like MusiCounts and Unison Benevolent fund, Gary has dedicated his time and resources to providing others with the opportunity to grow. We look forward to commemorating Gary’s philanthropic work at the 2018 JUNO Awards.”

Slaight was born in Edmonton, AB, and began his career with McLaren Advertising before serving as General Manager of Toronto rock station Q107. As President of Standard Broadcasting, Gary developed a successful growth expansion strategy, which led to the sale of the company to Astral Media. With the proceeds of the sale, Gary, along with his father Allan, made the decision to fund philanthropic initiatives with the establishment of the Slaight Family Foundation and to support the Canadian music industry and emerging artists through Slaight Music.

“I am truly honoured to be this year’s recipient of the Humanitarian Award,” said Slaight. ”Our family has had a tradition of giving back to the community that transcends from my parents Allan and Ada Slaight. The Slaight Family Foundation, created as a result of the sale of Standard Broadcasting, is a tribute to my parents commitment to community and of which I am proud to lead. Whether it is supporting a local music program for children or helping to advance key health care priorities, our goal is to make a positive difference on the lives of those around us and those needing our support globally. We truly want to make an impact and help those who need it the most.”

Slaight’s ongoing efforts within the Canadian music industry have led to the development of the Polaris Music Prize via The Slaight Family Heritage Prize, The Slaight Family Music Lab at the Canadian Film Centre, The Allan Slaight Stage at Massey Hall, The Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class, Canadian Music Week Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award, The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame via The Slaight Music Emerging Songwriter Award, and Slaight Music’s It’s Your Shot competition.

This year’s award will be presented at the 2018 JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards Presented by SOCAN on Saturday, March 24, 2018 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Top 10 Finalists for 2018 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class Announced

On Thursday, the JUNO Awards and Slaight Music announced the 10 emerging acts that will continue to a final round of judging in the 2018 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class.  This year’s three winners will be the third group to participate in Canada’s premier artist development program, which aims to equip artists with the tools, training, and guidance needed to further their careers, build their own sustainable businesses, and become ‘JUNO ready.’

The top 10 acts were selected by a panel made up of representatives from major and independent music labels, publishers, agents, managers, and media partners. The 2018 list includes:

The Master Class combines music education through MusiCounts and the recognition and support of music excellence through the JUNO Awards.  Allan Reid of CARAS/The JUNO Awards and MusiCounts will be featured on the 2018 Super Jury tasked with selecting the winners.  The Super Jury will also feature JUNO alumni Lights, Kardinal Offishall, Max Kerman (Arkells), and Gavin Brown, in addition to Ali Slaight of Slaight Music.  The acts selected by the Jury will receive a prize valued at over $100,000, including studio time at Slaight Music Recording Studios, an all-inclusive trip to Toronto for a week of mentorship hosted by Canada’s Music Incubator at Coalition Music, a trip to the 2018 JUNO Awards in Vancouver, BC, a performance slot at JUNOfest, and a chance to perform at the exclusive JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards.

Past winners of the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class include Neon Dreams, The Lytics, Youngblood, Derrival, Slow Leaves, and The Fortunate Ones.  Like this year’s group of finalists, their hometowns are spread across the country, and include Halifax, NS, Winnipeg, MB, Vancouver, BC, and St. John’s, NL.

Karl Wolf receives Gold plaque during JUNO Weekend in Ottawa

Canadian R&B artist Karl Wolf now has another Canadian Gold award plaque to add to his collection.

During JUNO Weekend in Ottawa, Wolf was presented with a Gold Single Award plaque for his hit “Amateur At Love,” a track which features fellow Canadian hip hop artist Kardinal Offishall. The plaque was presented by Cordova Bay Records at Wolf’s party Friday, April 1, at Flybar.

“Amateur At Love” is Wolf’s first certification as a solo artist since 2012’s “Mash It Up,” and is the first to be certified under the Single Award guidelines, which includes on-demand subscription service streams. In addition to his solo work, Wolf has collaborated as a songwriter on many projects, most notably OMI’s breakthrough Seven Times Platinum hit “Cheerleader.”

2017 JUNO Awards adds second wave of performers

Multi-Platinum rockers Billy Talent will perform at the 2017 JUNO Awards

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced the next group of performers for the 2017 JUNO Awards, broadcasting in 4K from Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre April 2, 2017, on CTV.

JUNO-winners Billy Talent, Dallas Smith, and July Talk have been confirmed as performers for the broadcast, joining the previously announced artists Arkells, A Tribe Called Red, Alessia Cara, Ruth B, Shawn Mendes, and The Sturmbellas. Diamond-certified Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Sarah McLachlan rounds out the list of confirmed performers for this year’s broadcast.

CARAS has also revealed that in light of its superstar roster, the 2017 JUNO Awards, hosted by Bryan Adams and Russel Peters, will expand to two-and-a-half hours for the first time in five years. This announcement also comes on the heels of the 2016 JUNO Awards winning the Canadian Screen Award for Best Music Program or Series last week.

Tickets for the 2017 JUNO Awards, starting at $59, are available through Ticketmaster or by phone at 1-877-788-3267. $1 from every ticket is donated to MusiCounts through the JUNOs’ partnership with Plus 1, a non-profit that partners with touring artists to facilitate a $1 add-on from every concert ticket to go to a cause the artist believes in. The donation will help ensure that children and youth across Canada have access to musical instruments.

Rock, pop, and jazz score big at 2017 Canadian Screen Awards

The 2017 Canadian Screen Awards, which recognize excellence in Canadian film, TV, and digital media productions, were handed out Sunday night at Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. Canadian rock heroes The Tragically Hip picked up the most awards in the music-related categories for the unforgettable broadcast of their August 20, 2016 hometown show in Kingston, ON.

The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration earned six awards for the production’s direction, design, sound, and photography. Hip members Paul Langlois and Rob Baker were on hand to accept their award for Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program, sharing their appreciation for all the support they felt during their Man Machine Poem summer tour.

Born To Be Blue, the Chet Baker biopic starring Ethan Hawke, picked up two awards for the film’s original score. Todor Kobakov, Steve London, and David Braid were awarded Achievement in Music – Original Score, while Braid also won Achievement in Music – Original Song sponsored by Slaight Music for “Could Have Been.” The film was shot in Sudbury, ON.

Trevor Yuile’s win for Best Original Music Score helped Orphan Black earn their leading total of nine ‘Candy’ awards, while Best Original Music Score for a Program sponsored by Slaight Music was awarded to Robert Carli for Murdoch Mysteries.

The 2016 JUNO Awards broadcast won Best Music Program or Series sponsored by Yangaroo. Last year, the 2015 JUNOs broadcast won the Live Entertainment Special category, which was awarded to the Tragically Hip this year.

Buffy Sainte-Marie announced as 2017 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award recipient

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced iconic singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, social activist, educator, philanthropist and visual artist Buffy Sainte-Marie as the recipient of the 2017 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award, presented by Bell Media. The award, which began in 2006 with recipient Bruce Cockburn, recognizes an outstanding Canadian artist whose humanitarian contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada and/or whose impact can be felt worldwide.

“It’s our privilege to present the legendary Buffy Sainte-Marie with the 2017 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award,” said Randy Lennox, President, Broadcasting and Content, Bell Media. “Her dedication to improving the lives of Indigenous people is truly humbling. We look forward to celebrating this iconic artist and her inspiring philanthropic work at this year’s JUNO Awards.”

Born on the Piapot Plains Cree First Nation Reserve in the Qu’Appelle Valley in Saskatchewan, Sainte-Marie is celebrated for her thought provoking lyrics and her passion for supporting Aboriginal people. In 1964, she became well known for her anti-war peace anthem “Universal Soldier,” and was one of the first people to merge pop and Aboriginal music with her 1976 hit “Starwalker.” Sainte-Marie’s 2015 album Power in the Blood won the 2016 JUNO Awards for Aboriginal Album of the Year sponsored by Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and Contemporary Roots Album of the Year, as well as the Polaris Music Prize.

“I’ve had some great partners in mobilizing my ideas in art, education and technology, especially the W.K. Kellogg Foundation who taught me that there’s a difference between an administrator and a visionary. Both are important but visionaries are seldom pushy in that business way that administrators learn; and visionaries don’t think in corporate pecking order terms so often get squashed out in normal business systems,” said Sainte-Marie. “I’ve been lucky enough to work in both worlds, and although my timing has sometimes been off and gotten my big mouth into trouble, other times, with the help of other people, I’ve been effective beyond my expectations. So I thank all my colleagues in and out of the music business for helping put my songs to work.”

This year’s award will be presented at the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards presented by SOCAN on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa, Ontario.
