#EveryStage: How Music Canada celebrates the success of Canada’s artists

Throughout March, Music Canada has been highlighting the ways our advocacy supports artists at every stage of their career, including our work on Music Education, Music Cities, and Copyright. As we head to Vancouver for the 47th Annual JUNO Awards, we now share our final instalment of the #EveryStage series outlining how Music Canada celebrates success of Canada’s artists and the music that resonates around the world.

Music Canada is proud to once again return as sponsor of the JUNOS Album of the Year category, as well as the Presenting Sponsor of the Chairman’s and Welcome Reception on Friday, March 23. With our sponsorship of the award, we join music fans across the country in celebrating the works from this year’s nominees – Arcade Fire, Ruth B, Shania Twain, Johnny Reid, and Michael Bublé – and congratulate the dedicated label and production teams involved with each release.

All of this year’s nominated Album of the Year releases have been officially certified through Music Canada’s Gold/Platinum program, which was launched in 1975 to celebrate milestone sales of music in Canada. The Gold/Platinum Certification & Awards Program provides a tangible recognition of national success for artists and their teams with our unique award plaques, who are often surprised with the plaques during tour stops throughout the country.

With over 17,000 albums, singles, digital downloads, ringtones, and music videos certified over the past 44 years, the program provides a unique historical record of popular music in Canada. Over the years, the certification sales criteria for Gold and Platinum records have reacted to market conditions, and are indicative of overall trends in the music industry. For example, we updated the program’s certification criteria in 2016 to begin accepting on-demand audio streaming towards new single certifications, and again in 2017 for albums. As with past updates, the current guidelines provide a more accurate reflection of Canadian music fans’ consumption habits, and has helped reward a new generation of Canadian and international artists who utilize these new digital platforms.

The Gold/Platinum Canada-branded certification announcements and award presentation photos are shared by thousands of fans across the world on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to help congratulate their favourite artists’ for success in our territory. In conjunction with the program’s social media presence and updated guidelines, Music Canada launched the Gold In Canada playlist in July 2017 on Spotify and Google Play, and updates the playlist every Thursday with 50 of the latest tracks across all genres earning the coveted Gold certification. In 2018, Music Canada curated three new all-Canadian playlists from the Gold/Platinum archives – Canada Vibes, Canada Rocks The 2000s, and Forty 45s – which are now available to stream across Apple Music, Spotify, and Google Play.

Music Canada also presents two awards annually at Playback, our annual industry dialogue and celebration. In 2017, Music Canada presented the inaugural Artist Advocate Award to Toronto-based artist, label owner, and activist Miranda Mulholland, in recognition of her outstanding advocacy efforts to improve the livelihoods of music creators.

Since 2015, Music Canada has also presented the President’s Award to an individual working outside the music community who displays a deep passion for music and the people who make it. In 2017, this award was co-presented to London Music Industry Development Officer, Cory Crossman, and Chris Campbell, Director of Culture and Entertainment Tourism at Tourism London, for their incredible commitment to making London, ON, a Music City. Their efforts helped the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences select London as the next host city for the 2019 JUNOS, which will be the first time the city will host the JUNO celebrations.

The 2018 JUNO Awards and portions JUNO Week events will stream live through CBC Music from Vancouver, BC, on Sunday, March, 25 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees, and we look forward to celebrating another year of Canadian music with fans nationwide.

Demi Lovato presented with multi-Platinum plaque in Toronto

Amidst her 2018 Tell Me You Love Me world tour, pop superstar Demi Lovato paid a visit to Toronto’s Air Canada Centre alongside DJ Khaled and Kehlani. Prior to her highly anticipated show Monday night, Lovato was presented with a custom award plaque backstage by Universal Music Canada. The plaque commemorates the Gold certifications of her 2017 album and title track Tell Me You Love Me, as well as the Triple Platinum status of the album’s single “Sorry Not Sorry.”

The album joins 2013 release Demi as her second Canadian Gold-certified album. Lovato has also received 6 solo track certifications in Canada, with “Sorry Not Sorry” now earning the highest certification level.

Kehlani presented with first Canadian Gold plaque in Toronto

American R&B singer and songwriter Kehlani is currently on tour across North America with Demi Lovato and DJ Khaled. Prior to her opening set Monday at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, the Oakland, CA-born artist was surprised with a custom Gold Single Award plaque by Warner Music Canada. The plaque represents her singles “CRZY,” from 2017 album SweetSexySavage, and “Gangsta,” her contribution to the Suicide Squad original soundtrack.

During the show, Kehlani showed love for her Toronto fanbase and joined DJ Khaled on stage in a custom Toronto Raptors jersey.

Kehalni will return to Canada in July for the FVDED in the Park Festival at Holland Park in Surrey, BC. The music video for “CRZY” can be viewed below.

Judah & The Lion receive Canadian Gold award plaques for “Take It All Back”

Nashville-based band Judah & The Lion have spent the majority of 2018 selling out concerts in cities across North America on their Going To Mars tour. On Friday, the genre-bending group made their highly anticipated return to Toronto for a show at the Phoenix Concert Theatre.

During an interview with etalk’s Devon Soltendieck, the band was surprised with their first Canadian Gold Single Award plaque by Universal Music Canada for their hit “Take It All Back” from their 2016 album Folk Hop N’ Roll.  The band also visited Canadian cities Vancouver and Montreal on this tour.

The Washboard Union surprised with first Canadian Gold plaque

Canadian country group The Washboard Union were surprised with their first Canadian Gold award plaques by Warner Music Canada last week for the single “Shot Of Glory.” The Vancouver-based trio received the awards in Toronto during a listening session of their brand new album. Following the presentation, they took to their social media accounts to announce the news to their fans.

Music Canada now curates Gold/Platinum playlists on Apple Music

Toronto, Feb. 27, 2018: Music Canada today announced it is curating music through its new profile on Apple Music. The popular Gold/Platinum certification and awards program joins a growing roster of curators on the service, which includes a variety of media publications, lifestyle brands, festivals, and record labels, including Music Canada member organizations Universal Music Canada, Warner Music Canada, Sony Music Canada, 604 Records, Last Gang, and Cadence Music.

Music fans can follow the Gold/Platinum Canada curator channel through the Playlists section of Apple Music. Five unique playlists are available upon launch, including Gold In Canada which is updated every Thursday with 50 of the latest singles that have the coveted Gold certification, as well as 2017: Year-End Recap, which features more than 300 songs newly certified in 2017.

There are three new all-Canadian playlists available now on Apple Music:

  • Canada Rocks The 2000s – a selection of Canadian rock and alternative hits certified by Music Canada that filled the airwaves and our portable music players in the Aughts;
  • Canada Vibes – a timeline of Gold/Platinum-certified Canadian hip-hop, rap, and R&B;
  • Forty 45s – a collection of past Canadian hits, originally certified by Music Canada as Physical Vinyl or CD Singles.

Music Canada first began accepting on-demand streaming data towards Gold/Platinum certifications with the launch of the Single Award in 2016. In the summer of 2017, Music Canada updated the guidelines for the historic Album Award to begin including Stream Equivalent Albums (SEA) and Track Equivalent Albums (TEA).

Music March For Music Therapy returns to Toronto for fifth year

Music Canada is proud to return as a sponsor for the 5th Annual Music March for Music Therapy in Toronto on Sunday, March 4, 2018, in support of the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund in partnership with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists.

The march will take place along Bloor Street West, which is a new route for the annual family-focused march. Participants will depart from the Music Therapy Center (1175 Bloor St. W) at noon and will end at Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor St. W) around 1:15pm, where amazing entertainment, delicious food, fun activities, and tons of auction prizes await.

This year’s fundraising goal has been set to $25,000 in honour of the charity’s 25th anniversary, which works to enhance our communities by providing accessible music therapy to our nation’s most vulnerable and underserved populations.

The march is free to attend, while the after party at Lee’s Palace will be $25 at door unless the attendee has made a fundraising page. Those who would like to donate to the fund but cannot attend the event can do so at the same page. Felix Cartal receives first Canadian Gold plaque in Toronto

Vancouver-based DJ and electronic producer Felix Cartal was surprised by Cadence Music Group with his first Canadian Gold Single Award plaque in Toronto this week for “Get What You Give,” his unique take on the 90’s New Radicals hit.

He shared his excitement for receiving the plaque with fans through Twitter and Instagram. Following his JUNO nominations, he tweeted:

Felix Cartal was a special guest at Tuesday’s 2018 JUNO Awards nomination press conference in Toronto, which found him with two nominations for the track in the Dance Recording of the Year and Producer of The Year categories.

Dua Lipa presented with Gold and Platinum plaques in Montreal

Ahead of her sold out show January 30 at Montreal’s MTELUS, British pop star Dua Lipa was presented with her first Canadian Gold and Platinum plaques for her breakout 2017 hits “New Rules” (Platinum) and “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” (Gold) by Warner Music Canada.

The highly anticipated Montreal appearance was the English singer-songwriter’s first Canadian appearance of 2018 and the second Canadian show of her Norther American Self-Titled Tour, which brought her through Toronto last November. Lipa will return to Canada on February 16 for a sold out show at Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre.

2018 JUNO Award nominees announced at press conference in Toronto

Felix Cartal, who earned two JUNO nominations Tuesday, performs at The Great Hall in Toronto.

The 2018 JUNO Award nominees were revealed earlier today during a press conference at Toronto’s Great Hall. Arcade Fire and Jessie Reyez lead this year’s nominees with four nominations, followed by Arkells, Gord Downie, Hedley, and Ruth B with three nominations. Reyez, along with two-time nominee Daniel Caesar and Vancouver natives Hedley, were also revealed as the first performers for the 47th annual broadcast, which will take place Sunday, March 25, 2018 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC.

Music Canada is proud to return as a sponsor for the 2018 Album of the Year award, which includes Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, Johnny Reid’s Revival, Michael Bublé’s Nobody But Me, Ruth B’s Safe Haven, and Shania Twain’s Now. 

Tuesday’s event kicked off with a performance by Gold-certified electronic producer Felix Cartal, and was hosted by Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe of CBC Music, the exclusive broadcast and content partner of the 2018 JUNO Awards.

Following introductory remarks by CARAS and MusiCounts CEO & President Allan Reid, CBC’s Executive Vice President Heather Conway revealed the broadcaster’s plans for their 2018 JUNO coverage, which will include a worldwide broadcast of the award show, exclusive cover sessions, podcasts, and a livestream of the highly anticipated JUNO Songwriters’ Circle. Conway also revealed that Sunday, March 25, will be known as Music Day on CBC, featuring a celebration of Canadian music across all platforms leading up to the evening’s broadcast.

Reid then returned to the podium to outline CARAS’ leadership towards improving gender parity within the music industry.

“There are very important conversations happening in our world right now around gender equality and sexual harassment,” said Reid. “It is critical that we work collectively as an industry to support a larger representation of women in music and encourage a culture that nurtures their participation and success.”

Reid continued by outlining CARAS’ efforts within the organization, including the formation of a working group to evaluate their initiatives related to equality inclusion and respect, and a scholarship for women in the technical field of production and engineering, During JUNO Week, CARAS will work with Let’s Hear It, the 2018 JUNO host committee, on a program called “Good Night Out” to promote safety and prevent sexual harassment at clubs. As well, 2018 Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award recipient Denise Donlon will host a panel and keynote during JUNO Week on paving a path to success for women in the industry.

More performers and additional details on JUNO Week concerts and events will be revealed in the coming weeks. A new block of tickets are now on-sale for the broadcast, with $1 from each ticket sale being donated to MusiCounts through a partnership with Plus 1.
