polarisheritage

On Monday, the Polaris Prize revealed the winning albums for 2016’s Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize, which honours Canadian albums of the past from four distinct time periods: 1960-75, 1976-85, 1986-95 and 1996-05.

The winning albums were revealed in a Facebook Live stream featuring Steve Jordan (Founder/Executive Director), Michael Barclay (Journalist), and Chris Murphy of 2015 winners Sloan. The award, which began in 2015, is described by Jordan as “our version of the Hall of Fame for some of the classic Canadian albums since 1960.”

Two winners for each era were chosen — one by public vote and one by the juries. Voting opened at the Polaris Music Prize Gala on September 19, 2016 and ended on October 17.

The 2016 Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize winning albums are:

1960-1975

Public: Neil Young – After The Gold Rush

Jury: Leonard Cohen – Songs Of Leonard Cohen

1976 – 1985

Public: Rush – Moving Pictures

Jury: Kate & Anna McGarrigle – Kate & Anna McGarrigle

1986-1995

Public: Blue Rodeo – Five Days In July

Jury: Mary Margaret O’Hara – Miss America

1996-2005

Public: Arcade Fire – Funeral

Jury: Lhasa – La Llorona

In 2015, four albums were chosen through public voting, which included Joni Mitchell’s Blue, Cowboy Junkies’ The Trinity Sessions, Sloan’s Twice Removed, and Peaches‘ The Teaches Of Peaches. As was done with the 2015 winners, Polaris will pay tribute to the 2016 winning albums by selecting eight artists to create a commemorative art print inspired by the albums.

Music streaming now included in Canada’s historic Gold/Platinum certification program

New award and branding revealed at CCMA Awards

Toronto, ON – September 12, 2016

mc-gp-enfr

With the introduction of a new Single Award, Music Canada’s Gold/Platinum certification and awards program will now include streams towards digital track certifications. Over 50 new Single certifications were revealed today, with 10 artists receiving their first Canadian certifications.

“Today’s announcement signifies a pivotal moment in Canada’s evolving digital music marketplace,” says Graham Henderson, President & CEO of Music Canada. “By accepting on-demand streams for track certifications, Music Canada can continue to acknowledge the success of Canadian and international artists, as well as the subscription-based streaming platforms currently thriving in our market. The new Single Award helps maintain the integrity of our Gold/Platinum program, which has historically recognized the active choice consumers make when building their personal music libraries.”

During County Music Week in London, ON, rising country stars Brett Kissel and Chris Lane were presented with the first Single Award plaques leading up to Sunday’s 40th CCMA Awards broadcast.

“We are thrilled that Music Canada is now accepting streams with its new Single Award,” says Steve Kane, President of Warner Music Canada, who presented Kissel with his plaque for the Gold Single ‘Airwaves’ at Saturday’s CCMA FanFest. “Canadian music fans have welcomed the arrival of streaming subscription services with open arms, and are now consuming more music than ever before. We are excited to honour new milestones for our artists who have flourished on this new path, and whose fanbases continue to grow as streaming increases in popularity.”

The new Single Award will combine on-demand audio streams from subscription services with digital download and CD single sales. Streams can be used toward certification using a conversion formula of 150 streams equaling 1 unit towards certification. This 150:1 ratio is consistent with other major global counterparts. Streaming data from YouTube/VEVO videos will not be accepted towards certification upon launch.

The Single Award launch also coincides with the reveal of new bilingual branding for the program, which has certified over 16,000 releases in its 41-year history.

Music Canada’s Gold/Platinum Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts are live with the new branding. For more information, visit www.musiccanada.com/gold-platinum.

As students nationwide return to the classroom this week, CBC Music, in association with MusiCounts, has opened registration to music classes, music clubs, and after-school programs for the Canadian Music Class Challenge (formerly Canada’s Greatest Music Class).

Music classes from elementary through high school nationwide are encouraged to learn and upload a video of their class performing one of 16 selected Canadian songs to the CBC Music website between September 30 and November 23, 2016. A panel of musicians and CBC Music journalists will evaluate applications, with the winning classes receiving a commemorative plaque, and a high-tech classroom recording kit that includes a laptop computer, recording software, speakers, a keyboard, microphones, and more.

The regional shortlist will be revealed on December 7, and the winning classes will be announced on Radio 2 Morning on December 16.

Schools who participate in the Canadian Music Class Challenge also have the opportunity to apply for new instruments and equipment through MusiCounts’ Band Aid Program. Through this program, MusiCounts provides musical instruments in $5,000 and $10,000 value allotments to support public (elementary, secondary, and separate) school programs across Canada.

To enter the contest, a supervising teacher (the “Registrant”) of an eligible music class, after school program, or music club (the “Music Class”) must register their music class by completing the entry form and submit an eligible video performance and “publicity” photo during the submission period.

Toronto music industry raises over $2000 for Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research

tmi4g

On Thursday night, members of Toronto’s music industry came together for a fundraiser in support of the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research. The group attended a Toronto Blue Jays game and gathered beforehand at Steam Whistle Brewery for a pre-game social.

Through beer, snack, and ticket sales, as well as a silent auction, attendees raised $2,100 for the Sunnybrook charity, surpassing the $1,000 goal leading up to the event.

More than 170 tickets were sold to the Blue Jays game, which included a donation to the Downie Fund with purchase. The event was organized by Jon Box of Universal Music Canada, who hopes the event can continue again next year and surpass 200 ticket sales.
