Over the weekend, Canadian country star Brett Kissel performed 8 sold-out drive-in concerts in the parking lot of Enoch, Alberta’s River Cree Resort and Casino, with all proceeds benefiting Food Bands Alberta via the Safeway Community Action Fund. With strict social distancing measures in place, Kissel made good on his commitment to “having one hell of a good time together, while apart!”

During one of his shows on Saturday, June 13, Kissel announced to his fans that “Airwaves” had now been officially certified Platinum in Canada. Fans celebrated with a chorus of car honks before launching into the hit single. Video of the announcement was captured by fans below.

“Airwaves,” from 2015 album Pick Me Up, is Brett Kissel’s first Platinum certification in Canada. In 2016, it became the first song to be officially certified under the Single Award guidelines, which allowed for on-demand audio streams to be included in the certification criteria.

Kissel will continue his run of drive-in concerts in Regina, SK this Saturday, and in Saskatoon on Saturday, June 27.

Music streaming now included in Canada’s historic Gold/Platinum certification program

New award and branding revealed at CCMA Awards

Toronto, ON – September 12, 2016

mc-gp-enfr

With the introduction of a new Single Award, Music Canada’s Gold/Platinum certification and awards program will now include streams towards digital track certifications. Over 50 new Single certifications were revealed today, with 10 artists receiving their first Canadian certifications.

“Today’s announcement signifies a pivotal moment in Canada’s evolving digital music marketplace,” says Graham Henderson, President & CEO of Music Canada. “By accepting on-demand streams for track certifications, Music Canada can continue to acknowledge the success of Canadian and international artists, as well as the subscription-based streaming platforms currently thriving in our market. The new Single Award helps maintain the integrity of our Gold/Platinum program, which has historically recognized the active choice consumers make when building their personal music libraries.”

During County Music Week in London, ON, rising country stars Brett Kissel and Chris Lane were presented with the first Single Award plaques leading up to Sunday’s 40th CCMA Awards broadcast.

“We are thrilled that Music Canada is now accepting streams with its new Single Award,” says Steve Kane, President of Warner Music Canada, who presented Kissel with his plaque for the Gold Single ‘Airwaves’ at Saturday’s CCMA FanFest. “Canadian music fans have welcomed the arrival of streaming subscription services with open arms, and are now consuming more music than ever before. We are excited to honour new milestones for our artists who have flourished on this new path, and whose fanbases continue to grow as streaming increases in popularity.”

The new Single Award will combine on-demand audio streams from subscription services with digital download and CD single sales. Streams can be used toward certification using a conversion formula of 150 streams equaling 1 unit towards certification. This 150:1 ratio is consistent with other major global counterparts. Streaming data from YouTube/VEVO videos will not be accepted towards certification upon launch.

The Single Award launch also coincides with the reveal of new bilingual branding for the program, which has certified over 16,000 releases in its 41-year history.

Music Canada’s Gold/Platinum Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts are live with the new branding. For more information, visit www.musiccanada.com/gold-platinum.

Brett Kissel presented with Gold plaque at epic ‘Hometown Homecoming’ show

brettkisselstartedgold

On Saturday, June 18, 2016, Canadian country star Brett Kissel returned to his hometown of St. Paul, Alberta, for a special sold out concert at Jaycee Ballpark. Dubbed the Hometown Homecoming, Kissel performed for over 3,000 fans in attendance, and thousands of more listeners across the province through a live broadcast on 840 & 910 CFCW.

‘It’s hard to put into words,” said Kissel of the special evening, “I’m blown away by the excitement and atmosphere. It really was surreal and so, so special to be performing for so many fans, family, friends, and people I grew up with who’ve supported me since the beginning, in my hometown. It was an awesome night.’

During the show, the JUNO Award winning artist was presented with a Gold plaque for his 2013 debut single “Started With A Song,” certified earlier this year. Kissel has previously received a Gold plaque for his single “3-2-1,” and posed with his latest plaque backstage following his monumental performance.

The event also raised over $60,000 for local charities and non-profit organizations, including a $10,000 donation from Kissel and event producers. $5,000 was donated to local cancer-support society Haying In The 30s, and another $5,000 was directed to Fort Murray fire-relief efforts.

Ontario Music Fund creating ‘Snowball Effect’ for artist development at Warner Music Canada

Last week, Toronto-based singer/songwriter Scott Helman released his new music video for “Bungalow”, which was filmed on location in Scugog, Ontario and supported by the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC)’s Ontario Music Fund. The video was shot over 2 days and featured a cast and crew of approximately 25 people.

Helman’s debut EP, Augusta, was released earlier this year on Warner Music Canada, and was also supported by the Ontario Music Fund. Through this support, the Ontario Music Fund is helping to launch the career of a new artist, said Warner Music Canada’s Chris Moncada, creating a “snowball effect” which will pay dividends for many years.

“The record and the videos trigger a cycle that sets many layers of employment opportunities into motion,” said Moncada. “The record and videos create the momentum for a tour, which creates a ripple effect. That ability to tour will provide activity for everyone from agents and promoters, to venue operators, sound technicians, bartenders, and parking lot attendants across Ontario. With Scott going on tour throughout the fall and into next year, this cycle is only beginning – it could move the needle for 18 to 24 months going forward”

Helman’s “Bungalow” is the latest video that Warner Music Canada’s artists have created with support from the Ontario Music Fund. Earlier this year, Canadian country artist Brett Kissel shot and filmed videos for “Tough People Do” and “Something You Just Don’t Forget” in Toronto. The songs are featured on Kissel’s 2013 album “Started With A Song”, and are the fourth and fifth videos borne out of the album. The first three videos were filmed in Nashville and Los Angeles, but the creation of the Ontario Music Fund helped make the case to move filming of the latter two videos to Ontario. Both of the videos featured a cast and crew of 15 to 20 people, working approximately 15 hours on each shoot.

The Fund also supported the creation of Mississauga punk rock band Billy Talent’s “Show Me The Way” video, which was filmed in Ontario and required approximately 15 full day crew.

“The Ontario Music Fund helped facilitate these videos, which might have otherwise been shot in a different province or country” said Moncada. “It has a real trickle-down effect that helps support video production jobs in Ontario, creating a day’s work for everyone from the actors and techs, to the caterers and truck drivers, and beyond.”

In addition to the videos, Warner Music Canada has leveraged the Ontario Music Fund to further the careers of Canadian artists such as Measha Brueggergosman.

“With Measha Brueggergosman, the OMF was integral in the creation of her upcoming Christmas album” said Moncada. “She is a Canadian star with worldwide appeal, so we’re really excited to see the reception to this record as we move into the holiday shopping season.”

In addition to videos and domestic recording, Warner Music Canada has leveraged the Ontario Music Fund to further the international careers of Canadian artists such as Kitchener Ontario’s Courage My Love.

“With Courage My Love, the OMF allowed us to invest in expanded marketing and publicity in the U.S. while the band was on the Vans Warped Tour this past summer. This directly contributed to the band having some of the highest merchandise sales on the tour for developing acts,” said Moncada. “On the strength of the Warped Tour response, the band has booked a headlining tour of clubs across America.  After these shows the band will come back to Ontario to work on their next record – again, it’s that snowball effect.”

The examples from Warner Music Canada illustrate that through targeted support, the Ontario Music Fund is driving activity in Ontario studios, production houses, and music companies, as well as increasing opportunities for Canadian artists to build their careers in Ontario, Canada, and internationally. For more information on the Ontario Music Fund, see the overview on the OMDC website.
