Top 10 Finalists for 2018 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class Announced

On Thursday, the JUNO Awards and Slaight Music announced the 10 emerging acts that will continue to a final round of judging in the 2018 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class.  This year’s three winners will be the third group to participate in Canada’s premier artist development program, which aims to equip artists with the tools, training, and guidance needed to further their careers, build their own sustainable businesses, and become ‘JUNO ready.’

The top 10 acts were selected by a panel made up of representatives from major and independent music labels, publishers, agents, managers, and media partners. The 2018 list includes:

  2. Caveboy: Montreal, QC
  3. Elise LeGrow: Toronto, ON
  4. FEATURETTE: Toronto, ON
  5. Ivory Hours: London, ON
  6. Nice Horse: Calgary, AB
  7. Nuela Charles: Edmonton, AB
  8. Quake Matthews: Halifax, NS
  9. The Katherines: Vancouver, BC
  10. The Treble: Winnipeg, MB

The Master Class combines music education through MusiCounts and the recognition and support of music excellence through the JUNO Awards.  Allan Reid of CARAS/The JUNO Awards and MusiCounts will be featured on the 2018 Super Jury tasked with selecting the winners.  The Super Jury will also feature JUNO alumni Lights, Kardinal Offishall, Max Kerman (Arkells), and Gavin Brown, in addition to Ali Slaight of Slaight Music.  The acts selected by the Jury will receive a prize valued at over $100,000, including studio time at Slaight Music Recording Studios, an all-inclusive trip to Toronto for a week of mentorship hosted by Canada’s Music Incubator at Coalition Music, a trip to the 2018 JUNO Awards in Vancouver, BC, a performance slot at JUNOfest, and a chance to perform at the exclusive JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards.

Past winners of the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class include Neon Dreams, The Lytics, Youngblood, Derrival, Slow Leaves, and The Fortunate Ones.  Like this year’s group of finalists, their hometowns are spread across the country, and include Halifax, NS, Winnipeg, MB, Vancouver, BC, and St. John’s, NL.

Karl Wolf receives Gold plaque during JUNO Weekend in Ottawa

Canadian R&B artist Karl Wolf now has another Canadian Gold award plaque to add to his collection.

During JUNO Weekend in Ottawa, Wolf was presented with a Gold Single Award plaque for his hit “Amateur At Love,” a track which features fellow Canadian hip hop artist Kardinal Offishall. The plaque was presented by Cordova Bay Records at Wolf’s party Friday, April 1, at Flybar.

“Amateur At Love” is Wolf’s first certification as a solo artist since 2012’s “Mash It Up,” and is the first to be certified under the Single Award guidelines, which includes on-demand subscription service streams. In addition to his solo work, Wolf has collaborated as a songwriter on many projects, most notably OMI’s breakthrough Seven Times Platinum hit “Cheerleader.”

2017 JUNO Awards adds second wave of performers

Multi-Platinum rockers Billy Talent will perform at the 2017 JUNO Awards

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced the next group of performers for the 2017 JUNO Awards, broadcasting in 4K from Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre April 2, 2017, on CTV.

JUNO-winners Billy Talent, Dallas Smith, and July Talk have been confirmed as performers for the broadcast, joining the previously announced artists Arkells, A Tribe Called Red, Alessia Cara, Ruth B, Shawn Mendes, and The Sturmbellas. Diamond-certified Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Sarah McLachlan rounds out the list of confirmed performers for this year’s broadcast.

CARAS has also revealed that in light of its superstar roster, the 2017 JUNO Awards, hosted by Bryan Adams and Russel Peters, will expand to two-and-a-half hours for the first time in five years. This announcement also comes on the heels of the 2016 JUNO Awards winning the Canadian Screen Award for Best Music Program or Series last week.

Tickets for the 2017 JUNO Awards, starting at $59, are available through Ticketmaster or by phone at 1-877-788-3267. $1 from every ticket is donated to MusiCounts through the JUNOs’ partnership with Plus 1, a non-profit that partners with touring artists to facilitate a $1 add-on from every concert ticket to go to a cause the artist believes in. The donation will help ensure that children and youth across Canada have access to musical instruments.

Rock, pop, and jazz score big at 2017 Canadian Screen Awards

The 2017 Canadian Screen Awards, which recognize excellence in Canadian film, TV, and digital media productions, were handed out Sunday night at Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. Canadian rock heroes The Tragically Hip picked up the most awards in the music-related categories for the unforgettable broadcast of their August 20, 2016 hometown show in Kingston, ON.

The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration earned six awards for the production’s direction, design, sound, and photography. Hip members Paul Langlois and Rob Baker were on hand to accept their award for Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program, sharing their appreciation for all the support they felt during their Man Machine Poem summer tour.

Born To Be Blue, the Chet Baker biopic starring Ethan Hawke, picked up two awards for the film’s original score. Todor Kobakov, Steve London, and David Braid were awarded Achievement in Music – Original Score, while Braid also won Achievement in Music – Original Song sponsored by Slaight Music for “Could Have Been.” The film was shot in Sudbury, ON.

Trevor Yuile’s win for Best Original Music Score helped Orphan Black earn their leading total of nine ‘Candy’ awards, while Best Original Music Score for a Program sponsored by Slaight Music was awarded to Robert Carli for Murdoch Mysteries.

The 2016 JUNO Awards broadcast won Best Music Program or Series sponsored by Yangaroo. Last year, the 2015 JUNOs broadcast won the Live Entertainment Special category, which was awarded to the Tragically Hip this year.

Buffy Sainte-Marie announced as 2017 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award recipient

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced iconic singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, social activist, educator, philanthropist and visual artist Buffy Sainte-Marie as the recipient of the 2017 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award, presented by Bell Media. The award, which began in 2006 with recipient Bruce Cockburn, recognizes an outstanding Canadian artist whose humanitarian contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada and/or whose impact can be felt worldwide.

“It’s our privilege to present the legendary Buffy Sainte-Marie with the 2017 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award,” said Randy Lennox, President, Broadcasting and Content, Bell Media. “Her dedication to improving the lives of Indigenous people is truly humbling. We look forward to celebrating this iconic artist and her inspiring philanthropic work at this year’s JUNO Awards.”

Born on the Piapot Plains Cree First Nation Reserve in the Qu’Appelle Valley in Saskatchewan, Sainte-Marie is celebrated for her thought provoking lyrics and her passion for supporting Aboriginal people. In 1964, she became well known for her anti-war peace anthem “Universal Soldier,” and was one of the first people to merge pop and Aboriginal music with her 1976 hit “Starwalker.” Sainte-Marie’s 2015 album Power in the Blood won the 2016 JUNO Awards for Aboriginal Album of the Year sponsored by Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and Contemporary Roots Album of the Year, as well as the Polaris Music Prize.

“I’ve had some great partners in mobilizing my ideas in art, education and technology, especially the W.K. Kellogg Foundation who taught me that there’s a difference between an administrator and a visionary. Both are important but visionaries are seldom pushy in that business way that administrators learn; and visionaries don’t think in corporate pecking order terms so often get squashed out in normal business systems,” said Sainte-Marie. “I’ve been lucky enough to work in both worlds, and although my timing has sometimes been off and gotten my big mouth into trouble, other times, with the help of other people, I’ve been effective beyond my expectations. So I thank all my colleagues in and out of the music business for helping put my songs to work.”

This year’s award will be presented at the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards presented by SOCAN on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa, Ontario.

Submissions now open for 2017 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class

Following a successful inaugural year, the JUNO Awards and Slaight Music have announced the return of the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class leading up to the 2017 JUNO Awards in Ottawa, ON. The unique artist development program aims to provide three Canadian artists or groups with essential tools, opportunities, and connections to amplify their careers.

The top three artists will be selected by the Super Jury consisting of JUNO Award winners Kardinal Offishall, Max Kerman of Arkells, Lights, and producer Gavin Brown, as well as A&R representative Ali Slaight of Slaight Music, and President/CEO of CARAS and MusiCounts, Allan Reid.

“Looking back on the early years of the band, I was pretty frazzled about 98% of the time. If I can offer some advice to a young artist to get that number down to 95%, then this is a job worth doing,” said 2016/17 Super Jury member Max Kerman. “The Master Class provides very practical utilities for artists hoping to get their foot in the door. I’m happy to be involved again this year.”

The three finalists will receive an all-inclusive trip to Toronto for an intensive mentorship week with Canada’s Music Incubator at Coalition Music, culminating with a music industry showcase night. The finalists will also receive an all-inclusive trip to the 2017 JUNOS in Ottawa, ON, showcase opportunities during JUNOfest, a mini-doc on JUNOTV.ca, studio time at Slaight Music Recording Studios, and a $10,000 MuchFACT Online Music Video Award.

Submissions for 2017 are open and will close on June 30, 2016 at 5:00 PM ET. The top 10 finalists, selected by representatives from major and independent music labels, publishers, agents, managers and media partners, will be announced August 3 at www.junomasterclass.ca. The three winners will be revealed on September 13.

2016 JUNO Award nominees announced

The nominees for the 2016 JUNO Awards were announced today by The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) at a press conference at The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto.

Celebrating its 45th year, the JUNO Awards broadcast will take place in Calgary, AB, on Sunday, April 3, 2016, with scheduled performances from 2016 JUNO nominees The Weeknd, Alessia Cara, Shawn Mendes, Dean Brody, and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Bryan Adams. Singer/songwriter and 2016 JUNO nominee Scott Helman closed out the event, which also included a performance by Calgary hip hop artist Transit.

Leading up to the broadcast, Calgary will host JUNO Week March 28 – April 3, 2016, featuring events like the JUNO Cup, JUNO Fan Fare presented by HMV, JUNO Songwriters’ Circle co-presented by SOCAN & Yamaha Canada Music and the two-day music celebration JUNOFest.

Fans will be able to vote for their favourite artist in the JUNO Fan Choice Awards presented by TD. Voting is open now through April 3 at junofanchoice.ca and through Twitter using their favourite artists JUNO hashtag.

Alessia Cara announced as first performer at 2016 Juno Awards

The Canadian Academy Of Recording Arts & Sciences has announced 2015 breakthrough artist Alessia Cara as the first performer at the 2016 JUNO Awards, Sunday April 3 in Calgary, AB.

“Undoubtedly one of the hottest artists in music right now, Alessia embodies why Canadian music is dominating the charts internationally,” said Randy Lennox, President, Entertainment Production and Broadcasting, Bell Media. “With more performers to be announced in the coming weeks, this talented, young artist is setting the stage for what is guaranteed to be a spectacular show.”

“With a soulful voice heard around the world, Alessia Cara is one of Canada’s brightest young artists,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards & MusiCounts. “We’re extremely proud of her global chart topping success and we can’t wait for her JUNO stage debut.”

In 2015, the Brampton, ON natived released her debut album Know-It-All (Def Jam/Universal Music Canada) and has made appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Ellen, and The Streamy Awards performing her Gold-certified viral hit “Here”.

A limited batch of tickets will go on-sale for the 2016 broadcast Friday December 11 at 10 AM MST.

2016 JUNO Award Submissions Now Open

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced that submissions for the 2016 JUNO Awards are open today, October 1st. Applicants can now submit their package at http://junosubmissions.ca/ for consideration. The JUNO Awards will be presented during JUNO Week, held in Calgary, Alberta, March 28th through April 3rd, 2016.

The eligibility period for the 2016 JUNO Awards is between September 1st, 2014 and November 13th, 2015. Other important dates to remember:

  • October 23, 2015, 5:00 pm (EST): Early-bird deadline to receive discounted submission rates
  • November 13, 2015, 5:00 pm (EST): Final submission deadline for ALL categories (except International Album of the Year and Album of the Year)
  • January 6, 2016, 5:00 pm (EST): Final submission deadline for International Album of the Year and Album of the Year

Applicants can save up to 40% on the submission fee by becoming a member of CARAS at https://carasonline.ca/academy-delegate/.

The JUNOs have also announced that for the first time, streaming data will now be considered in determining nominees in the sales based categories. This change allows the JUNO Awards to better reflect how fans are consuming music. The streaming data will be provided by Nielsen Media Research Ltd.

The JUNOs also announced that the nominees for the JUNO Fan Choice will now be determined by an equal weight of single sales, streams, and Next Big Sound data, rather than album sales and Next Big Sound data in years past.

Additionally, the JUNOs announced a change to the criteria for album submissions. Going forward, a project that is 20 minutes or has 6 unique songs will be considered a full album. In this context, ‘unique’ means no remixes, acoustic versions, or added accompaniment versions, etc.

The JUNOs also announced that The Roots & Traditional Album of the Year: Solo and Roots & Traditional Album of the Year: Group categories have been changed to Contemporary Roots Album of the Year and Traditional Roots Album of the Year, which will ensure two genres of music are not competing against each other in the same category.

Calgary To Host The 2016 JUNOS

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (CARAS) has announced that Calgary, Alberta will play host to the 45th annual JUNO Awards and JUNO Week celebrations in 2016. Calgary first hosted to JUNOs in 2008 and after a successful community-based bid led by Tourism Calgary, the city will again welcome Juno Week March 28 – April 3, 2016.

“We’re delighted that the JUNO Awards will be returning to Calgary for the first time in eight years,” said Cindy Ady, CEO of Tourism Calgary. “2016 will be a great year for music in Calgary as we highlight Canada’s best musical talents during JUNO Week, followed by the opening of the highly anticipated National Music Centre later in the year.”

Hosting a major national event like the JUNO Awards falls in line with the Alberta Music Cities Initiative (AMCI) and the Fertile Ground 2014 report, which outlines several recommendations on how music can be positioned as a vehicle for the diversification of Alberta’s economy and a tool that municipalities can use to stimulate economic growth, increase investment, retain youth, and drive tourism.

In 2008, the Juno Awards generated a total economic impact of $11.3 million for the city of Calgary. From 2007 to 2014 the JUNO Awards have created a total economic impact of almost $88 million combined from its hosting cities like Toronto ($14 million), Regina ($10 million) and Calgary.

“To bring the industry to Calgary and let them see the NMC is just too good of an opportunity to have go by,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO of CARAS/The JUNO Awards, when speaking with The Calgary Herald. “It just feels like such a great opportunity to be in Calgary around the time to help them launch that.”

When it is completed, the new 160,000-square-foot facility will house the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Country Music Association Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as community and education programs.

“I’m thrilled Calgarians will once again be hosting the JUNO Awards,” said Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who will be in attendance at next month’s JUNO Awards in Hamilton, ON. “This is a tremendous opportunity for Calgary and our music and culture scene.”

The 45th annual JUNO Awards will be broadcast on CTV from The Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday, April 3, 2016.
