Demi Lovato presented with multi-Platinum plaque in Toronto

Amidst her 2018 Tell Me You Love Me world tour, pop superstar Demi Lovato paid a visit to Toronto’s Air Canada Centre alongside DJ Khaled and Kehlani. Prior to her highly anticipated show Monday night, Lovato was presented with a custom award plaque backstage by Universal Music Canada. The plaque commemorates the Gold certifications of her 2017 album and title track Tell Me You Love Me, as well as the Triple Platinum status of the album’s single “Sorry Not Sorry.”

The album joins 2013 release Demi as her second Canadian Gold-certified album. Lovato has also received 6 solo track certifications in Canada, with “Sorry Not Sorry” now earning the highest certification level.

Bahamas surprised with first Canadian award plaques

Afie Jurvanen, better known by his stage name Bahamas, was presented with his first two Canadian Gold award plaques earlier this week at a private event by Universal Music Canada. The Barrie, ON-raised artist received a Gold album plaque for his 2012 album Barchords, which was nominated for Adult Alternative Album of the Year at the 2013 JUNO Awards, along with a Gold single plaque for the album’s lead track “Lost In The Light.”

Bahamas will release a new album in 2018 entitled Earthtones, and will tour through North America beginning January 12 in Halifax, NS.

Slaight Music launches It’s Your Shot 2017 competition

Submissions for It’s Your Shot 2017 are now being accepted, as Canadian music company Slaight Music has officially opened the national songwriting and artist development competition. Launched in 2010, the content is open to all musical genres, and encourages artists to submit a song and/or video for a chance to win a Grand Prize valued at $100,000 in total.

This year, Slaight Music is partnering with Hidden Pony/Universal Music Canada, providing the winning artist with recording, distribution, radio promotion, publicity, and marketing support, along with a professionally produced photo shoot, artist biography and two music videos.  The winner will also receive business mentoring, performance opportunities, and brand development across the artist’s website and social media platforms.

Past winners of the contest include Notifi (2016, Sony Music Canada), Kayla Diamond (2015, Cadence), Sam Drysdale (2014, Warner Music Canada), Jillea (2013, Universal Music Canada), Liteyears (2012, Maple Music), and Liz Coyles (2011, Maple Music).

Submissions will be open until March 15, 2018, with the winning submission announced in May 2018.

Toronto music industry raises more than $4,000 for Unison and MusiCounts at Blue Jays game fundraiser

In its second year, the Toronto music industry Blue Jays game raised an incredible $4,404.75 to support the Unison Benevolent Fund and MusiCounts. This is nearly double the amount raised in the event’s inaugural year, where $2,100 was raised in support of the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research.

Jon Box of Universal Music Canada is the organizer of the annual event, and is already planning to surpass this year’s achievement in 2018.

“We are inspired by the work of our 2017 charities, MusiCounts and Unison Benevolent Fund, and our greater industry who supported the event with nearly 400 ticket purchases!” says Jon Box. “There’s nothing more gratifying than bringing people together for a good cause. We now have a 2018 goal to sell 500 tickets and raise $5,000. Looking forward to sharing details soon!”

Congratulations to everyone who helped to organize the event, donated prizes for the raffle/silent auction and attended the game. Thanks also to Steam Whistle Brewing, who donated event space and staff for a pre-game get together, as well as $1 from each beer sold to support Unison and MusiCounts.

K. Flay receives first Canadian Gold plaque in Elora, ON

American singer-songwriter K. Flay was surprised with her first Canadian Gold Single Award plaque last Saturday for her breakout debut single “Blood In The Cut.” K. Flay was presented with the plaque by Universal Music Canada prior to her set on the Main Stage at Riverfest in Elora, ON, headlined later that evening by Gold-certified psychedelic rockers MGMT.

K. Flay shared the exciting news with her fans through her social media channels.

Niall Horan receives first solo Canadian Double Platinum plaque at MMVAs

During the 2017 iHeartRadio MMVAs celebrations, Irish singer-songwriter Niall Horan was presented with a Canadian Double Platinum award plaque for his single “This Town.” The track is Horan’s first Canadian award plaque since debuting as a solo artist following his departure from multi-Platinum pop group One Direction.

Horan is pictured above with Universal Music Canada President Jeffrey Remedios, which was shared through Remedios’ Twitter page. Universal also shared a photo of their team with Horan and his plaque.

Julia Michaels presented with first Canadian award plaque at 2017 iHeartRadio MMVAS

American singer-songwriter Julia Michaels received her first Canadian Double Platinum plaque in Toronto at the iHeartRadio MMVAs this past Sunday for her breakout track “Issues.” Michaels was presented with the plaque by her Universal Music Canada team, and can be seen posing with President & CEO Jeffrey Remedios above.

Michaels shared the news with her fans through an Instagram featuring the whole Universal team, thanking them for their work with the hit.

Universal Music Canada to open new office, recording studio, and live music venue in Downtown Toronto

It’s official; Universal Music Canada will move to downtown Toronto in 2018.

In an announcement Tuesday outside their future location at 80 Atlantic Ave., Universal Music Canada President and CEO Jeffrey Remedios revealed the company’s plans to move the from their North York office to the Toronto tech hub located in the city’s west end.

“80 Atlantic will be the next phase of the growth and evolution of our city’s music community as we build greater resources and support for artists, enabling them to fully refine their craft at home,” said Remedios outside the new location across from Lamport Stadium.

The new facility will be “so much more than a record label’s office,” as Remedios revealed plans for recording, live performance, content creation, and fan-focused spaces, which will be open to independent artists.

Toronto Mayor John Tory was also on hand for the announcement, praising Universal’s move, Remedios’ initiative, and the impact this will have on Toronto’s music scene.

“Universal is on the edge of innovation and digitization that continues to transform music and every aspect of our lives,” said Tory. “This is the kind of creativity and innovation that I want to see in every corner of Toronto.”

“Musicians attract other musicians,” Tory added, “and that is good for the soul of the city.”

The afternoon announcement featured a performance by Universal recording artists The Beaches, named after their east-end Toronto neighbourhood. The full announcement was live-streamed by Universal Music Canada, and is available to watch below.

Alx Veliz receives Gold Single plaque for “Dancing Kizomba” at Music Canada AGM

During Music Canada’s 2016 Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, Toronto-based singer, songwriter, and producer Alx Veliz was presented with his first Canadian Gold plaque for the single “Dancing Kizomba.” The plaque for the breakout hit, which has also been recorded in Spanish and certified Gold in Spain, was presented to Veliz by Universal Music Canada President & CEO Jeffrey Remedios.

“Dancing Kizomba” was officially announced Gold in the first wave of Single certifications in September, when Music Canada revealed updates to its Gold/Platinum program to now include on-demand streams for track certifications.

Following the plaque presentation, Veliz performed three songs from his 2016 debut EP Love Has No Language, including “Heroes & Villains,” “Dancing Kizomba,” and his latest single “U+Me.”

Toronto music industry raises over $2000 for Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research

On Thursday night, members of Toronto’s music industry came together for a fundraiser in support of the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research. The group attended a Toronto Blue Jays game and gathered beforehand at Steam Whistle Brewery for a pre-game social.

Through beer, snack, and ticket sales, as well as a silent auction, attendees raised $2,100 for the Sunnybrook charity, surpassing the $1,000 goal leading up to the event.

More than 170 tickets were sold to the Blue Jays game, which included a donation to the Downie Fund with purchase. The event was organized by Jon Box of Universal Music Canada, who hopes the event can continue again next year and surpass 200 ticket sales.
