K. Flay receives first Canadian Gold plaque in Elora, ON

American singer-songwriter K. Flay was surprised with her first Canadian Gold Single Award plaque last Saturday for her breakout debut single “Blood In The Cut.” K. Flay was presented with the plaque by Universal Music Canada prior to her set on the Main Stage at Riverfest in Elora, ON, headlined later that evening by Gold-certified psychedelic rockers MGMT.

K. Flay shared the exciting news with her fans through her social media channels.

Portugal. The Man receive first Canadian Gold plaques for ‘Feel It Still’ in Toronto

Prior to two sold-out headlining shows last week at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall, Portland, OR-based band Portugal. The Man were surprised with their first Canadian Gold award plaques by Warner Music Canada for their summer hit “Feel It Still.” The track comes off their eighth full length studio album Woodstock, released earlier in 2017.

The band shared the news with their fans through their Instagram and Twitter accounts.

“We love this song,” the band said in an Instagram post earlier in the week, when they were also presented with Gold RIAA plaques. “It’s the most natural thing we’ve ever done.”

Fitz and the Tantrums receive first Canadian Double Platinum plaque in Toronto

Prior to their set at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage Saturday opening for OneRepublic, Los Angeles neo-soul band Fitz and the Tantrums were surprised with Double Platinum award plaques for their hit single “HandClap.”

“HandClap,” which is the lead single from their 2016 self-titled album, is the first track by the band to be certified Double Platinum in Canada, with their hit “The Walker” reaching Platinum status in 2016.

The band shared a short video of the plaque presentation with their fans through their Twitter page.

Khalid receives Gold and Platinum Awards in Toronto

Prior to performing a sold-out show at Toronto’s Rebel Nightclub Wednesday, American R&B singer Khalid received a custom Gold plaque for his 2017 debut album, American Teen. Presented to him by Sony Music Canada, the plaque also commemorates his Platinum debut Single, “Location.”

Toronto was the 19-year-old artist’s third and final stop in Canada on The American Teen Tour, following performances at Pemberton Music Festival in Pemberton, BC and Métropolis in Montreal, QC earlier this summer.

Royal Blood presented with Gold Plaques at WayHome Festival

Ahead of their performance at the third annual WayHome Music & Arts Festival last Saturday in Oro-Medonte, ON, British artists Ben Thatcher (left) and Mike Kerr (right) of Royal Blood received Canadian Gold plaques for their debut self-titled album and hit single “Figure It Out.”  Royal Blood’s self-titled album, released in 2014, was verified by the Official Charts Company to be the fastest-selling British rock debut album in the UK since 2011.

The band shared the news with their fans through their Instagram page.

Royal Blood will be returning to Canada in 2017 with tour dates in Vancouver (August 8th and September 1st) and Toronto (September 9th). The video for “Figure It Out” can be viewed below.

Music Canada launches ‘Gold In Canada’ playlists

Music Canada is excited to reveal our new ‘Gold In Canada’ playlist, available now through Spotify and Google Play Music. The playlist features fifty of the latest tracks of all genres and eras certified as a Gold Single in Canada, and will be updated every Thursday to keep the rotation fresh with the latest certifications.

Music Canada’s current Gold/Platinum Single Award, which includes on-demand streams towards certifications for the first time in the program’s history, was introduced September 12, 2016. Since the update, Music Canada has seen over a 60% increase in Gold track certifications from the previous year, with many domestic and international artists receiving the first Canadian Gold certifications of their careers.

Spotify users can follow the playlist by visit the embedded player below, and Google Play Music users can click here to subscribe to the playlist. Music fans are encouraged to follow and share the playlist when they see their favourite artists added to the rotation using the hashtag #GoldInCanada.

Ed Sheeran presented with first Canadian Diamond award

Ed Sheeran returned to Toronto’s Air Canada Centre for two sold out shows over the weekend as part of his North American tour in support of his 2017 album, Divide. Prior to the show, Sheeran was presented with multiple award plaques for the album and its singles by Warner Music Canada.

The UK singer-songwriter was first presented with a custom Double Platinum award plaque for Divide, which also showcases his multiple certified tracks from the album including “Castle On The Hill (Triple Platinum),” “Galway Girl (Platinum),” “Perfect (Gold),” and “Happier (Gold).”

Sheeran was then presented with his first Diamond award plaque for his smash single “Shape Of You,” which is the fourth track to be certified Diamond in 2017.

Tim Hicks presented with pair of Platinum plaques in Toronto

Canadian country star Tim Hicks was presented with two Platinum Single Award plaques Monday at a surprise event at Toronto bar Grace O’Malley’s, where Hicks began his music career performing covers before signing with Open Road Recordings. Hicks was presented with plaques for his 2013 hits “Get By” and the breakthrough viral hit “Stronger Beer,” which was never officially released as a single.

“For a song that was never a single, and never even supposed to be a song in the first place, this is absolutely incredible news,” said Hicks in a post on his website and social media accounts. “I can’t thank my fans enough for making this happen. I’m humbled and honoured with a ‘u’.”

He has received five Gold certifications to date, including “Got A Feeling,” “Here Comes The Thunder,” and “Hell Raisin’ Good Time.” “Get By” and “Stronger Beer” can both be found on his 2013 debut album Throw Down. Hicks was also presented with two CIMA Road Gold certifications at Monday’s event.

July Talk receive Gold “Push + Pull” plaque before massive hometown show

Hamilton, ON’s Arkells and hometown heroes July Talk joined forces Saturday night for their biggest shows to date in front of a capacity crowd at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage. Prior to taking the stage for their 16 song set, July Talk were surprised with Gold award plaques by Sleepless Records for “Push + Pull,” the lead single from their 2016 album Touch.

It is the third Canadian Gold certification for the group, joining single “Guns + Ammunition” and their 2012 self-titled debut album.

Niall Horan receives first solo Canadian Double Platinum plaque at MMVAs

During the 2017 iHeartRadio MMVAs celebrations, Irish singer-songwriter Niall Horan was presented with a Canadian Double Platinum award plaque for his single “This Town.” The track is Horan’s first Canadian award plaque since debuting as a solo artist following his departure from multi-Platinum pop group One Direction.

Horan is pictured above with Universal Music Canada President Jeffrey Remedios, which was shared through Remedios’ Twitter page. Universal also shared a photo of their team with Horan and his plaque.
