The JUNO Awards returning to Toronto in 2021 for its 50th Anniversary

The The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced that the 2021 JUNO Awards will be held in Toronto. This commemorates the 50th anniversary of the event, and will take place on March 28th at the Scotiabank Arena.

It has been a decade since Toronto last hosted the JUNOS – which first began in 1970, and was held at the historic venue St. Lawrence Hall. The award ceremony continued to take place in the city for another exciting 20 years, and will now return to Toronto for its golden anniversary in 2021. During this time, the JUNOS hit the road, with each host city seeing an average of over $10 million in economic impact.

“50 years ago Walt Grealis and Stan Klees created the JUNO Awards right here in Toronto and it’s an honour to bring Canada’s biggest night in music back home to where it all started,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO of CARAS / The JUNO Awards and MusiCounts, in a release. “This country continues to produce some of the most vibrant artists in the world and we invite you to join us in what will be the greatest national celebration of Canadian music ever.

The return of the JUNOS is supported by the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto. Both the Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture Lisa MacLeod and Toronto Mayor John Tory released statements highlighting the city’s excitement over this announcement. In a video posted on his Twitter account, Mayor Tory added how Toronto’s music industry “has thrived as we foster a succesful environment for new and emerging artists, many of whom I hope to see at the JUNOS in a few short years.” 

JUNO Week 2021 will kick off on March 22 with the finale event, The JUNO Awards Broadcast, streaming on CBC Music from the Scotiabank Arena. The 2020 JUNOS are also just around the corner, airing live from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

Tyler Shaw celebrates Gold certification during JUNO weekend in London

2019 is shaping up to be a terrific year for B.C.-raised singer and songwriter Tyler Shaw. During JUNO weekend in London, ON earlier this month, Shaw was presented with his fourth Canadian Gold award plaque by his Sony Music Canada team and management for the hit single “With You,” joining hits “Wicked,” “House Of Cards,” and the Platinum-certified “Kiss Goodnight.”

During the JUNOS broadcast, Shaw performed the hit single, and you catch watch this performance below.

Brett Kissel presented with Gold plaque for “Anthem” during 2019 JUNO weekend in London

The 2019 JUNO Awards are officially in the books, and country artist Brett Kissel walked away from the festivities in London, ON with some new hardware in hand. To kick the weekend off, Kissel was presented with a custom Gold plaque for his hit “Anthem” by his Warner Music Canada team, as well as a CIMA Road Gold plaque commemorating his cross-Canada ticket sales.

During Sunday’s broadcast, Kissel took home the JUNO for Country Album of the Year for We Were That Song, which features the Gold-certified title track as well as “Anthem.”

2019 JUNO nominees announced at CBC headquarters in Toronto

The nominees for the 2019 JUNO Awards were announced earlier today from CBC’s headquarters in Toronto, hosted by CBC Radio personality Raina Douris.

Multi-Platinum star Shawn Mendes leads the pack of nominees with 6 nominations, followed by R&B superstar The Weeknd with 5. Loud Luxury and bülow, who will both perform at the 48th annual broadcast along with Corey Hart, both received 4 nominations. The full list of nominees can be viewed here.

12-time JUNO winner and Diamond-certified artist Sarah McLachlan, who was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2017, was announced as the host for this year’s awards, and was in attendance to reveal this year’s nominees.

Prior to announcing McLachlan as this year’s host, CARAS/JUNOs President & CEO Allan Reid took to the podium to welcome the industry guests in attendance, congratulate this year’s special award recipients, and reveal new details about the JUNO Week celebrations in London, ON. Reid also announced preliminary details on a new partnership with the National Music Centre, as well as an “Allies in Action” discussion panel in partnership with Women In Music Canada, Canadian Live Music Association, and PwC.

Music Canada is proud to work alongside the JUNOs and return as sponsor of the Album of the Year category, featuring the albums Darlène by Hubert Lenoir, These Are The Days by Jann Arden, Shawn Mendes by Shawn Mendes, My Dear Melancholy, by The Weeknd, and Outsider by Three Days Grace.

Fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite JUNO artists with the 2019 Fan Choice category, featuring nominees Alessia Cara, Avril Lavigne, bülow, Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine, Killy, Loud Luxury, NAV, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd, and Tory Lanez. Fans can vote by sharing the official JUNO Fan Choice hashtag on Twitter or Instagram, or by including the hashtag in a comment on any post on The JUNO Awards Facebook Page. As well, fans can vote by listening to their favourite artists’ songs in the official JUNO Fan Choice Presented by TD playlist on Apple Music.

Corey Hart announced as 2019 inductee to Canadian Music Hall of Fame

On Sunday, March 17, Corey Hart will be officially inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the 2019 JUNO Awards broadcast at Budweiser Gardens in London, ON. To celebrate the induction, Hart will take to the stage to perform on live television for the time in 20 years.

“We are proud to welcome Corey into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards & MusiCounts. “He was one of the biggest Canadian success stories of the eighties and nineties and even though he stepped back from the spotlight, he remained active in writing and producing for other artists.  We look forward to celebrating him at The 2019 JUNO Awards in London.”

Hart has sold over 16 million records around the world, with his 1985 album Boy In The Box receiving a Canadian Diamond certification, and his debut album First Offense, featuring the iconic lead single “Sunglasses at Night,” reaching Triple Platinum status.

“I am deeply humbled by this invitation into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame,” said Hart. “It’s an incredible honour to be acknowledged alongside so many other talented and venerable Canadian artists. My career goal since the beginning has always been to remain one hundred percent authentic to my artistic vision while embodying the highest respect and dedication towards the craft I love so much. It’s even more symbolic to receive this recognition as I release my first collection of new studio music and prepare to embark on my first national Canadian tour in over 20 years – these are indeed …very exciting times for me.”

A new exhibition honouring Hart, in partnership with CARAS, will launch at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre in Calgary. Milestones: Corey Hart, which captures the stories behind some of Hart’s biggest career breakthroughs and features memorable artifacts from the singer-songwriter’s past, opens on March 22, 2019 and will run until October 2019. Some of these items include handwritten lyric books and the signature Wayfarer sunglasses that he wore in his “Sunglasses at Night” video. Bonus fan messages provided by Hart will be sprinkled throughout the exhibition and can be viewed using interactive “sunglasses.”

James Barker Band take home JUNO and Gold award plaque from Vancouver

Ontario-crafted country outfit James Barker Band had a sensational 2017, raking in two Canadian Gold Singles for tracks of their breakthrough debut EP Game On. During JUNO weekend in Vancouver, the band was surprised by Universal Music Canada with a third Single Award plaque for the “Just Sayin.” The group also took home some more hardware from Vancouver, winning the JUNO for 2018 Country Album of the Year during the Gala Dinner and Awards, where they also performed.

The band announced the news to their fan in an Instagram video, popping champagne while overlooking the beautiful Downtown Vancouver scenery.

Jess Moskaluke surprised with Canadian Gold plaque during JUNO weekend in Vancouver

Canadian country star Jess Moskaluke was surprised with a Gold Single Award plaque from MDM Recordings for her single “Kiss Me Quiet” during JUNO weekend in Vancouver. “Kiss Me Quiet” is the Saskatchewan singer-songwriter’s second solo Gold track certification, with “Cheap Wine & Cigarettes” earning Platinum status in 2016. Moskaluke has also received a Gold certification for her collaboration with Paul Brandt on “I’m An Open Road,” which was certified in June of 2017.

Moskaluke spent the better part of the JUNO Awards festivities recovering from the flu, but that did not stop her from sharing the news with her fans through Instagram as soon as she could.

British Columbia music community celebrates new music fund, AMPLIFY BC

Vancouver, March 22, 2018: Music BC and Music Canada today applaud the Government of British Columbia’s announcement of a new music fund for the province called AMPLIFY BC. Administered through Creative BC, the new Fund will provide much-needed support for the development of BC artists and musicians, music companies, skills development and live music production, stimulating economic growth and activity in the sector.

“Music Canada would like to applaud the Government of BC and Minister Beare for this important investment which demonstrates their confidence in the music sector,” says Amy Terrill, Executive Vice President of Music Canada. “The intense interest in the former BC Music Fund’s suite of programs underscores that BC is home to a vibrant, diverse and engaged music community ready to take their songs and businesses to the next level. With this new investment BC will continue to benefit from leveraged private and other government dollars, and ensure the BC music sector remains competitive with other jurisdictions.”

The announcement was made during JUNOs Week, as the Canadian music industry was congregated in Vancouver for the 47th annual JUNO Awards, celebrating excellence in Canadian music while also showcasing Vancouver, and the province’s music sector to the rest of the country.

“This is a great day for the province’s music scene allowing us to build on the momentum of the last two years,” says Alex Grigg, Executive Director of Music BC. “In this time, our industry has focused on helping BC artists develop their careers and showcase their talent around the world, boost business in BC studios, create greater opportunities for live music performances that bolster activity in our communities, and facilitate professional development so that we can build a stronger, more sustainable industry. On behalf of the staff, board of directors and the BC music industry we extend our gratitude to the Government of BC and Minister Beare for their continued support and investment into the BC Music sector.”

#EveryStage: How Music Canada’s Music Cities advocacy aims to make Canadian municipalities more music and musician friendly

Last week Music Canada launched our JUNOS 2018 #EveryStage campaign, intended to highlight the ways our advocacy supports artists at every stage of their career, with a blog about our aim to secure equitable access to quality music education for all young Canadians.

In the second installment of our four-part series leading up the 2018 JUNO Awards, we’ll explore Music Cities and Music Canada’s efforts to help make Canadian municipalities more music and musician-friendly. A Music City is a community of any size with a vibrant music economy.

Music Canada’s world-renowned and globe-spanning research has identified several key strategies that cities both large and small can use to grow and strengthen their music economy. We work with municipal governments and regional partners to implement music and musician-friendly policies, establish music offices and advisory boards, as well as promote music tourism, audience development and access to the spaces and places where music is made.

Cities across Canada, including London, Vancouver, Hamilton, Calgary, Toronto, Barrie/Simcoe County, Halifax, Moncton, Ottawa, Windsor-Essex, Guelph and more have implemented or are exploring measures to maximize the impact, growth and support for their local music ecosystems, and Music Canada has been proud to provide support through our research and expertise in the development of these strategies.

Our annual Music Cities Summit at Canadian Music Week brings policymakers, city planners and global music industry representatives together to discuss, learn and collaborate.

Chambers of commerce have an opportunity to carve out a leadership role in leveraging music as a driver of employment and economic growth. In 2016, Music Canada partnered with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) to create a Music Cities Toolkit, designed to provide the CCC’s network of over 450 chambers of commerce and boards of trade, in all regions of the country, with a guide to activate the power of music in their city.

Gary Slaight announced as 2018 Humanitarian Award recipient

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced broadcasting executive, music industry leader, and philanthropist Gary Slaight as the recipient of the 2018 Humanitarian Award. The award, formally known as the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award, recognizes an outstanding individual in the music community whose humanitarian contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada and/or whose impact can be felt worldwide.

“We are honoured to present Gary Slaight with the Humanitarian Award,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards and MusiCounts. “His commitment to helping others and continued selflessness places him in a category of his own. Gary’s dedication to making the world a better place is truly inspiring; from The Slaight Family Foundation’s work with charities to his support for emerging artists, and music industry organizations like MusiCounts and Unison Benevolent fund, Gary has dedicated his time and resources to providing others with the opportunity to grow. We look forward to commemorating Gary’s philanthropic work at the 2018 JUNO Awards.”

Slaight was born in Edmonton, AB, and began his career with McLaren Advertising before serving as General Manager of Toronto rock station Q107. As President of Standard Broadcasting, Gary developed a successful growth expansion strategy, which led to the sale of the company to Astral Media. With the proceeds of the sale, Gary, along with his father Allan, made the decision to fund philanthropic initiatives with the establishment of the Slaight Family Foundation and to support the Canadian music industry and emerging artists through Slaight Music.

“I am truly honoured to be this year’s recipient of the Humanitarian Award,” said Slaight. ”Our family has had a tradition of giving back to the community that transcends from my parents Allan and Ada Slaight. The Slaight Family Foundation, created as a result of the sale of Standard Broadcasting, is a tribute to my parents commitment to community and of which I am proud to lead. Whether it is supporting a local music program for children or helping to advance key health care priorities, our goal is to make a positive difference on the lives of those around us and those needing our support globally. We truly want to make an impact and help those who need it the most.”

Slaight’s ongoing efforts within the Canadian music industry have led to the development of the Polaris Music Prize via The Slaight Family Heritage Prize, The Slaight Family Music Lab at the Canadian Film Centre, The Allan Slaight Stage at Massey Hall, The Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class, Canadian Music Week Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award, The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame via The Slaight Music Emerging Songwriter Award, and Slaight Music’s It’s Your Shot competition.

This year’s award will be presented at the 2018 JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards Presented by SOCAN on Saturday, March 24, 2018 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
